Whiteboards can be messy and hard to manage for remote teams. Bayline provides a dedicated online Event Storming tool that enhances collaboration, provides structure, and uses AI to accelerate your design process from start to finish.

To get started, log in to Bayline or sign up for free, create a new project, and follow this step-by-step guide. We'll walk you through conducting a Software Design-level Event Storming session in Bayline.

Step 1: Create a new Workflow

Create a new, empty Workflow and open it. This is your blank workspace, where you can Add a starting point, Generate a workflow with AI, or review and update Settings. You can also invite team members to collaborate on the project.

For more details about this view, click the question mark icon in the top toolbar.

Step 2: Review card types

Open Settings by clicking the cogwheel above the Workflow diagram, then select the Cards tab. When you create a new Workflow in Bayline, a default set of card types is provided for Big Picture, Process Modeling, and Software Design-level Event Storming.

  • Show in backlog: Make Problem and Opportunity visible in the backlog so they can be prioritized at the end of the session.
  • Use AI: Untick Given-When-Then and Read Model, and tick Problem and Opportunity, so AI generates the card types you actually need.
  • Domain Model Role: Set the Command card type to Command, and the Aggregate Root card type to Aggregate Root.
Note: There are three special card types — Command, Read Model, and Aggregate Root — used to group Commands and Events around Aggregates at the end of a session. If “Aggregate” feels confusing, feel free to rename it to something like “Entity”.

Step 3: Generate with AI

Whenever you start with a blank canvas, click “Generate Workflow with AI” to describe your process in plain language — for example, “A CRM process used by an enterprise sales team.” Deselect the checkboxes for Command, Entities, and Read Models if you only want Events for a Big-Picture session, then click Generate Workflow.

Once generation completes, you'll see a full swimlane diagram with events distributed across roles — ready for your team to review together.

Step 4: Collaborate

Go through the workflow step by step with your team to make sure each event is correct. Invite teammates for real-time co-editing — sometimes it works best if one person drives the tool while others contribute verbally.

  • Review each event: Is it correct, or should another event come first? Rearrange events with drag & drop, or add new ones with AI.
  • Check the actor/role: Swimlanes represent who's involved. Rename, reorder, or add new swimlanes as needed.
  • Open the sidebar: Select an event to review its Command and Aggregate, and update names if necessary.
  • Identify hotspots: Discuss problems and opportunities at each step, and capture them as cards.
  • Add decisions: Use a decision (branching) card only where the process actually splits — model the happy path first.

Step 5: Iterate

Repeat Step 4 for every event, refining the workflow as you go. You don't need to finish everything in a single session — come back and iterate with different groups of people over time.

Start with the most valuable path (the “happy path”), then layer in the most important alternatives. Use Groups to divide your canvas into separate phases or stages, separated by a draggable vertical divider.

Step 6 (Optional): Read Models and Commands

Bayline offers powerful support for defining Entities, Read Model Attributes, and Command Attributes. See our Domain-Driven Design and Event Modeling guides for a deeper dive into these features.

Step 7: Aggregates View and Bounded Contexts

Bayline provides an instant view of Commands and Events grouped around Aggregates, located under the workflow diagram in the Domain Model tab. Each Command has its corresponding Event aligned on the same row, giving you a clear summary of every aggregate and the commands available on it.

Next, assign a Bounded Context to each aggregate by clicking “Select bounded context.” Once you've grouped aggregates — for example into Lead Management and CRM — each box in the view represents one bounded context, ready to become an independent service.

Step 8: Wrap Up

You've now captured the workflow and identified bounded contexts, aggregates, commands, actors, problems, and opportunities — the foundation of your domain model.

As a final step, review the identified problems and opportunities, and plan them into iterations using the Backlog or User Story Map view. Assign items to releases, then filter the diagram by release to see how each iteration impacts the end-to-end workflow.

Best practices for Event Storming

  • Capture Events that represent ONE state change in ONE system.
  • Exclude events that don't affect a system — social moments are important, but unlikely to trigger a command.
  • Split broad events into multiple state changes: instead of “Order Processed,” use “Order Validated,” “Payment Captured,” and “Order Packed.”

Why Use a Tool for Domain-Driven Design?

Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is a powerful method for building complex software that truly aligns with business needs. But turning business knowledge into a well-structured, actionable domain model is a significant challenge — it takes deep collaboration, expertise, and a lot of time. That's where a specialized DDD modeling tool becomes essential.

Bayline is an AI-powered domain-driven design tool built to solve this problem. It accelerates the modeling process end to end, enabling teams to visually collaborate, define bounded contexts, and generate API-ready models from a simple text prompt — bridging the gap between business concepts and executable code.

Getting Started with Our DDD Modeling Tool

Log in to Bayline or sign up for a free trial. Once logged in, create a new project, start a blank workflow, and follow this walkthrough.

Step 1: Review Card Types

Before you begin, make sure you have an empty canvas in front of you. In an empty swimlane, you'll see two buttons: “Add start point” and “Generate workflow with AI.”

Open Workflow Settings via the cogwheel icon, navigate to the Cards tab, and review the settings:

  • Use AI: Verify Command and Aggregate Root are selected. Deselect Read Model and Given-When-Then for this walkthrough.
  • Domain Model Role: Set Command to Command, and Aggregate Root to Aggregate Root.

Step 2: Generate with AI

With the workflow empty, click “Generate Workflow with AI” and describe your process — for example, “A CRM process used by an enterprise sales team.” Make sure “Generate Command Attributes with AI” and “Generate Entities with AI” are checked, then click Generate Workflow.

Once generation finishes, each Event should include exactly one Command card and one Aggregate Root card. Click an Event to inspect its cards in the sidebar — the Aggregate Root can hold a simple text label, or be linked to a formally defined Entity.

Head to the Entities tab to see the generated data models, including field names, primary keys, and example data. You can also import your own Entities before generating a workflow, and Bayline will base the diagram on them.

Finally, open the Domain Model tab with no Event selected to see every Aggregate Root and the Commands grouped around it.

Step 3: Review the Events

Now review each Event and its details, ideally together with domain experts. For every event, ask:

  • Event name & actor: Is the actor correct, and does the event name reflect the actual language used in the business (the Ubiquitous Language)?
  • Aggregate root & entity: What core concept is being created or modified? Should it be managed as a distinct record with its own lifecycle?
Note: Make sure the event you're reviewing represents a genuine state-changing action. If it describes a query or read operation instead, it may not belong in this primary sequence — consider modelling it as a Read Model interaction instead.

Step 4: Review the Command Details

Next, define the data fields a Command needs to execute. Open the sidebar's Data Fields tab to see a live mockup of the input form generated from the Command. Bayline supports five ways to model Command fields:

  • Single input fields — plain values like text, numbers, or dates.
  • Single reference to a related entity — shown as a single-select dropdown, linked by ID.
  • Multiple references to related entities — shown as a multi-select list.
  • Collections of entities nested inside the Aggregate boundary — shown as a repeatable list of items.
  • A single nested entity inside the Aggregate boundary — shown as an embedded sub-form.

Bayline flags a warning when a Command field doesn't have a matching field on the linked Entity, so mismatches are easy to catch early.

Step 5: Define Read Models

Read Models represent the information an actor needs before executing a Command — think of them as queries that fetch context to support a decision or populate a form. Not every Command needs a preceding Read Model.

Select an event, open the Domain Model tab, and enable “Show read models.” Click + Read Model, choose the relevant Entity, select the fields to display, and mark any fields that should be filterable. Describe the query in plain language so the intent stays clear for the whole team.

Step 6: Define Bounded Contexts

A core DDD concept is the Bounded Context — dividing a large system into manageable, logically consistent parts. In the Domain Model tab, assign each Entity to a Bounded Context: for example, group Lead-related entities into a “Lead Management” context, and Opportunity and Quote into a “CRM” context.

Once assigned, the Domain Model view groups Aggregates by their Bounded Context, with Commands shown alongside their respective Aggregates — and Bayline's Context Map highlights integration points where a Command in one context triggers updates in another.

Step 7: Generating API Code from the Domain Model

You've now defined a comprehensive Domain Model: Domain Events, Entities, Commands, Read Models, Roles, and Bounded Contexts. This model becomes living system documentation and a solid foundation for development — as long as you keep it up to date as your understanding of the domain evolves.

Introduction to Our Event Modeling Tool

Bayline is a dedicated Event Modeling tool designed to bring structure and clarity to your software design. Event Modeling has emerged as a powerful method for designing business information systems, aligning business and development teams, and enabling independent teams to build functional “slices” in parallel.

While the strength of Event Modeling lies in its simplicity, mastering it can take real effort. Bayline transforms this process by generating a fully detailed event model from any workflow description in minutes — accelerating system design while keeping structure, clarity, and close collaboration with domain experts intact. Bayline can also generate code directly from an event or domain model.

This guide covers the seven core steps of Event Modeling, based on the well-known automation and translation patterns used across the industry, and recreates a typical hotel-booking example.

Step 1: Brainstorming

Brainstorm state-changing events together with your team and AI. Describe your scenario in plain language and let AI assist — for example, a hotel workflow spanning: guest registered an account, manager added a room, guest booked a room, manager prepared the room, guest checked in, coordinates sent from the guest's GPS, guest left the hotel, guest checked out, payment requested, payment succeeded.

In an empty workflow, click “Generate workflow with AI,” paste your description, and generate using the default options.

Step 2: The Plot

Review the timeline and make sure it tells a coherent story. AI-generated swimlanes sometimes represent systems (like a GPS device or payment system) rather than actors — in Bayline, we typically reserve swimlanes for roles such as Guest or Manager. Add an Automation lane for steps that are triggered automatically, and move the relevant events into it.

Note: The arrows between events represent a plausible timeline, not a strict trigger sequence. They illustrate how events typically unfold within the organization.

Step 3: The Storyboard

For each event, create a UI mockup of the input form the actor fills out and submits. If the step is automated, imagine a robot filling out the form. Click an event, open the sidebar's Data Fields tab, and inspect the Command in the Domain Model — adding, updating, or reordering fields updates the mockup automatically.

Step 4: Identify Inputs

In this step, simply confirm the name of the Command that will be invoked when the form is submitted. AI usually suggests a sensible name — if it fits, move on to the next event.

Step 5: Identify Outputs

Think of this step as the data an actor needs before invoking the Command — the Read Model. Ask: “What information does this actor need in order to complete this step?” Just like a Command, you can add, update, and remove fields on the Read Model.

Note: An Event should have exactly one Command, but it can have multiple associated Read Models.

Step 6 — Apply Conway’s Law

Now organize the system's parts into autonomous components. Switch to the Domain Model tab and assign Bounded Contexts to the Aggregate Roots — for example, Guest Account to an Auth context, Room and Booking to Inventory, Payment to Payment, and Guest Location to GPS. This establishes clear boundaries between decoupled parts of the system.

Step 7 — Elaborate Scenarios

Bayline helps you write Given-When-Then scenarios and prioritize them into iterations, all while keeping a complete view of the end-to-end flow. Navigate to the User Story Map tab, assign GWTs to Release 1 or Release 2, and filter the diagram by release to see exactly which parts of the workflow are planned for the first iteration.

The Domain-Centric View

Before you begin, make sure you have a Domain Model built using Event Storming or Event Modeling — this model is the source of truth for the AI. Open the Code View for the Bounded Context you want to work on, and you'll see a file tree that mirrors your Domain Model directly: Commands, Entities, GWTs, and Read Models, instead of a generic folder structure.

This view gives instant feedback: a red dot means the underlying domain element changed since code was last generated; a yellow dot means AI has generated changes that haven't been approved yet. It closes the loop between design and code, so your documentation always stays aligned with your codebase.

Step 1: Choose Your Architecture with a Starter Template

Every application starts with a solid foundation. Select a Starter Template from the “Code Generation Steps” panel — a professional, full-stack framework boilerplate for your project, covering popular backend stacks. Selecting a template instantly populates your project with a well-organized file structure for a server, client, or both.

Step 2: Review Your API Specification

With your architecture in place, Bayline automatically translates your Domain Model into a standard OpenAPI (Swagger) specification detailing every endpoint and request/response model. Review this spec before the AI writes a single line of code — a crucial validation step that ensures the AI builds exactly what you designed.

Step 3: Generate and Update Code with AI

You have two ways to generate code:

  • Generate All: Bayline's AI scans every change in your domain model (items with red dots) and builds out backend endpoints, data models, query handlers, business logic with tests derived from your GWT scenarios, and a complete React frontend wired up to your API.
  • Generate Per-Item: For finer control, generate code for a single command, entity, read model, or GWT via its menu — useful when you only need to update one part of the system.

Bayline only changes the parts of your codebase directly affected by your domain changes, leaving the rest untouched.

Step 4: Review, Approve, and Manage Changes

AI-generated changes are presented as a diff, similar to a pull request — your current code on the left, proposed changes highlighted in green on the right. Approve changes file by file with “Apply,” or accept everything at once with “Approve all changes.” You're always the final authority, with AI as a powerful assistant.

Step 5: Commit Directly to GitHub or Download as ZIP

Connect your Bayline project to a GitHub repository, view a diff of your approved changes against the code already there, and commit and push directly to your chosen branch. Prefer to work locally? Download the entire project as a ZIP file from the Code View tab instead.

Advanced Controls

Selecting your AI model: choose the specific LLM used for code generation from the model selector at the bottom of the “Code Generation Steps” panel, and experiment to see what fits your project best.

Resetting your code view: the Reset Code View button permanently deletes generated code within the current Bounded Context and unlinks the connected GitHub repository, letting you pick a new Starter Template. This never affects the code already committed to GitHub — it only resets the project inside Bayline.

What Is a Process Mapping Tool?

A process mapping tool helps you visualize how work and information flows through your organization. It turns messy tasks, responsibilities, and decisions into clear diagrams that teams can understand and improve. Simple Process Mapping

Process mapping is widely used, but it often becomes overly complex and leads to disengagement. The key to effective process mapping is keeping it simple — you don't need dozens of different elements. Bayline's Simple Process Mapping (SPM) breaks it down into three essential building blocks: Role, Event, and Decision.

Step 1: Create a New Process Map

Start by creating a new process map with the + New Workflow button and give it a name, like “Customer Complaint Handling.” You'll land on a blank workspace where you can add a start point manually, generate a workflow with AI, or invite team members to collaborate.

Step 2: Add Roles Using Swimlanes

Every process involves different people or systems. Bayline uses swimlanes to represent roles — the “who” in your process, such as Customer, Customer Service, and Supervisor.

Tip: A role is a function, not a job title — one person may take on multiple roles in a small team.

Click + Add lane for each role, then click each label to rename it. You can also change a lane's background color under Settings → Events & Lanes to highlight it visually.

Step 3: Add Events (What Happens)

Events are shown left to right along a timeline, and each one represents something that has already happened in the process. Click Add start point and enter your first event, then use the round + icon next to it to add the next one, dragging events into the correct swimlane as needed.

Step 4: Add Decisions (Where the Process Splits)

Decisions are shown as diamonds and help you map alternative paths — for example, “Was this issue resolved by Customer Service?” Yes leads to closing the complaint; No leads to escalating it to a Supervisor.

Add a decision after the relevant event, name it clearly (including the question mark), then add the two outcome events and drag them into the right swimlanes, labeling each path “Yes” or “No.” Bayline displays these labels automatically so the flow stays easy to follow.

Once you've mapped out the basic process, the next steps depend on your goal. You could enrich the map with work instructions, group events by system to highlight integrations and ownership, or annotate known problems and opportunities along the process — or define your own custom card types under workflow settings.

What is a User Story Map?

User Story Mapping is a powerful planning technique used to visualize product backlogs in the context of an end-to-end user journey, ensuring a shared understanding of project goals and priorities. While traditional story mapping relies on sticky notes or index cards, AI-powered tools like Bayline streamline the process, making it faster and more collaborative.

Unlike a flat backlog, which often obscures the big picture, a User Story Map structures the narrative of a user's journey — giving you a clear view of end-to-end workflows, more productive prioritization, and shared alignment on project goals.

The Structure of a User Story Map

  • Events (the backbone): high-level activities that form the narrative backbone of the map, such as “Search for Product” or “Add to Cart.” Bayline uses Events — instead of traditional Activities — to align with modern practices like Event Storming.
  • User Stories (the details): granular descriptions of user needs beneath each Event, typically following the format “As a [user], I want to [goal], so that [reason].”
  • Priority or iterations: horizontal sections representing priority levels or release phases — the top section holds the highest-priority stories, lower sections hold future enhancements.

Step 1: Create a new Workflow

Create a new, empty Workflow and open it. This is your blank workspace, where you can add a starting point or generate a workflow with AI, and invite team members to collaborate on the project.

Step 2: Generate with AI

Click “Generate Workflow with AI” and describe your workflow in natural language — for example, “An order process used by an e-commerce platform, spanning the roles: Customer, Warehouse, Courier, and Support.” Deselect the default checkboxes and check only “User Story,” then click Generate Workflow. Once it finishes, switch to the User Story Map tab below the diagram.

Step 3: Review and Edit Events

Review the Events that form the backbone of the user journey. Drag and drop to rearrange them into a logical sequence, add missing events, edit names to better reflect your domain language, and remove anything that doesn't fit your workflow.

Step 4: Review and Edit User Stories

Click on an Event to view its associated stories in the sidebar. Make sure each story clearly describes a specific user goal, follows the “As a … I want to … so that …” format, and reflects real needs from your product domain. Edit, add, or delete stories as needed — some Events will have several stories, others just one.

Step 5: Slice the Map into Iterations or Releases

With Events and User Stories in place, prioritize by assigning a release number to each story. The top section — Release 1 — should include the most critical stories that form your Minimum Viable Product. Lower sections represent future iterations: enhancements, edge cases, or optional flows.

Step 6: Review and Fill in Gaps

Use the release filter above the diagram to focus on one iteration at a time and validate whether each slice forms a meaningful, end-to-end experience. Ask yourself: do the stories in Release 1 form a complete workflow? Are any critical steps missing? Are there edge cases you haven't considered? Fill in any gaps you find.

Core Concepts

What's an organisation?

An organisation is an entity that runs one or several projects.

What's a project?

A project contains one or many workflows. A project belongs to an organisation.

What's a workflow?

A workflow is a visualisation of your user journey or business process and requirements. A project can have several workflows.

What's an event (task)?

An event is a step in your business process or user journey.

What's a card/requirement?

Cards/Requirements are linked to events and can be a user story, a business rule, a UI sketch, or anything else your developers need to know.

How to Use Domain Models

Under the 'Domain Model' tab in Bayline, you can view your workflow from a software architecture design perspective. Commands can be grouped by aggregates, and you can see the command parameters and the entities (with data fields) within each aggregate. You can assign one or more aggregates to a Bounded Context and generate the code for a Service API as well as unit tests. This approach is effective when gradually breaking down a monolith and replacing it with well-designed Service APIs — and is equally useful when designing new APIs.

The perfect starting point for discovering and understanding the domain together with domain experts by exploring events, commands, and aggregates collaboratively.

The perfect next step after Event Storming for designing and documenting the system behaviour and data flow from end to end for implementation planning.

Domain-Driven Design

A strategic and tactical software design philosophy that structures complex software around the business domain and its ubiquitous language, aligning software design with the business domain through a shared language and well-defined boundaries. Once you have created a domain model, you can generate a large part of the codebase for the application with AI.

User Story Mapping

Using User Story Mapping in Bayline

Bayline includes a User Story Mapping view that streamlines agile release/iteration planning. Switch from the list view ("Backlog") to the User Story Map view. In the list view, you can assign a release (or iteration) number to each card in the product backlog. In the map view, you can move cards between releases by dragging and dropping them, and move cards between events/steps by dragging and dropping them sideways.

Linking cards to releases

Each event in the diagram can correspond to a step in a user journey or an epic. You can add user stories or any other type of requirement for each step or epic, and assign each requirement a release (or iteration) number in the product backlog.

Filter releases

Apply a visual filter across the entire workspace to see the desired content in each release or iteration, using the "Filter Releases" dropdown at the top of the screen.

Configuring card types

Card types can be defined under Settings so you can adapt the content to your project's or organisation's needs — KPIs, test cases, user stories, given-when-then, business rules, problems, risks, improvements, system components/aggregates, questions, UI sketches, read models, commands, and more.
